Step 4

Step 4: Hardware & Compatibility

Expenses. The dreaded word that strikes fear and pain to our…wallets. It’s never fun spending money unless we see it as some kind of investment. The topic of hardware might initially seem like driving the latest and greatest automobile versus a well-used and rather out-dated counterpart but hardware is significantly more critical than what it may seem at first.

A rather (in)famous reference that we can all seem to relate to at one point or another. Despite the outward poke-at-fun, it is very informative and would recommend it to anyone looking for a more advanced approach.

Depending on what you’re doing with your computer, be it gaming or otherwise, you’re going to need some high performance pieces in order to keep pace with today. Personally, I’m horrible with computer parts, as I’ve no experience with it. I enjoy all the shiny and new, yes I’ll admit, but to actually have any idea of what I’m getting myself into?

No. And this is an area where you shouldn’t pretend to know what you’re talking about either — if you’re guilty of such. Picking the wrong pieces for high performance can lead to disastrous results. It’d be the equivalent of taking a few thousand dollars, and throwing it out a second story window, and into various pockets. You get the idea.

How do you get around this? Start with books. For “Dummies.” It’s a great way to educate yourself on a necessary topic and bring yourself up to speed. Pun intended.

HowStuffWorks is a great, reputable site that can give insight on any necessary parts that you’re looking up.

Another great site I find and use personally is Kotaku. While it’s a bit more in tune with a specific gaming demographic of people, it has a plethora of knowledge readily accessible at any given moment.

After you’ve found all the parts, you’re ready for the next big step!
